Last time, we took a look at a few questions most patients have about dental x-rays. This week, we’re going to dig a bit deeper to cover some additional questions or concerns related to dental x-rays.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe for Kids?

Many parents are worried about exposing their children to x-ray radiation. However, the amount of radiation associated with a dental x-ray is extremely small. This means a dental x-ray is usually perfectly safe for children.

You can limit the need for dental x-rays by teaching your children strong oral hygiene habits. By reducing the risk of periodontal disease, you also reduce the need for dental x-rays.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe During Pregnancy?

It is considered safe for a pregnant woman to have a dental x-ray completed. However, you will want to ensure to take all the proper precautions to shield the baby from radiation. While there is very minimal radiation exposure during a dental x-ray, proper precautions are always advised.

What Are Panoramic Dental X-Rays?

A panoramic dental x-ray is a type of examination where your entire mouth is captured in a single image. During a panoramic dental x-ray examine, the patient stands still while the x-ray machine rotates around the patients head. During this examination, a complete two-dimensional image of the mouth will be produced.

A panoramic dental x-ray will show the teeth, upper and lower jaws, and any surrounding tissue or structures.

What Are Digital Dental X-Rays?

Digital dental x-rays are the newest form of dental x-ray. Using the latest technology, the digital dental x-ray creates a computer-generated image of the patient’s mouth. Like the panoramic dental x-ray, a digital dental x-ray allows your dentist to get a closer look at your teeth and jaw. However, because it is viewed on a screen, digital dental x-rays provide a 3D like view.
