Habits that will Stain Your Teeth

Are you upset that your teeth aren’t as dazzling white as they once were? Having professional teeth whitening done can restore your smile, but if you don’t change some of your eating and drinking habits, your teeth will become stained once again. Teeth whitening may remove those stains, but it doesn’t stop future staining. That’s why you need to identify what’s causing the discoloration. Once you understand which habits are staining your teeth, you can deal with them.

Look at What You’re Drinking

There are a number of beverages that can stain your teeth. Soda and coffee can both stain your teeth. Don’t assume that clear or light colored sodas stain less, either. These sodas are often very acidic and can damage the enamel on your teeth, making it easier for stains to occur. Sports drinks may also be just as acidic.

Tea can also stain your teeth. Black tea is the worst, but even some white, green, and herbal teas can cause stains. Juices made from cranberries, blackberries, and other berries can also lead to stains.

Wine can also lead to stains. Just like with sodas, don’t assume that white wine stains less than red wine. Both can affect the coloring of your teeth.

Foods Can Also Cause Stains

Of course, eating certain foods can also stain your teeth. Berries aren’t any better than the juices made from them. You also need to be careful of anything that has been artificially colored, including gum, popsicles, and some candies. The pigments used may cause discoloration.

Tobacco Use

Smoking, as you likely know, can discolor your teeth in addition to causing a number of other health issues. Chewing tobacco is just as bad and can lead to oral cancer. Even if you don’t care what your teeth look like, you should stop using tobacco products for your overall health.

Forgetting to Brush

Finally, having poor oral hygiene can also lead to stained teeth. You should brush at least twice a day, floss once a day, and use mouthwash regularly.15
